Dave Taylor on the Black Kraken

Given all the online chatter about the quality of the Dreadfleet ships, and the creative ways GW is now "cutting up" their plastic miniatures for tooling, I was quite excited to see how simple the cool Black Kraken was to assemble. Just three parts to the ship (left side, right side, and central gubbinz) and the base.

Knowing it would be important to get the base painted up nice and cleanly I decided not to glue down the ship. I can paint them both separately and get into all the little crevices. Starting with the base first, I used a slight variant of the GW scheme:

• Basecoat with Vallejo Imperial Blue
• Highlight up to Vallejo Magic Blue
• Highlight up to GW Ice Blue
• Wash with GW Badab Black
• Wash with GW Thraka Green
• Hit highlights with GW Ice Blue again
• Highlight up to GW Skull White

This fairly simple scheme gives a lot of depth, helping the water looks dangerously turbulent and definitely dangerous.

The next step is to finish off the base by painting up the foamy wash behind the ship, then get started on the ship itself. Hopefully I'll have it all done in time for the GW online competition (entries close December 31, I think).

Welcome Aboard...

Welcome aboard Celebrity Dreadfleet, you scurvy seadogs! This blog is designed to track and promote the Celebrity Dreadfleet Project- a gaming event and charity raffle taking place at Adepticon 2012 to support the Ocean Conservancy.

Celebrity Dreadfleet has collected the support of some renowned painters and hobbyists to complete a painted set of Games Workshop’s Dreadfleet game. Ten different painters, including some Slayer Sword champions and multiple Golden Demon winners, have agreed to each paint one of the Dreadfleet vessels. Together with painted versions of the terrain and gaming accessories, these ships, along with the rules (signed by all the artists) will be raffled off at Adepticon 2012.

The painted fleet will be displayed here as the artists complete their charges, along with any news or additional sponsor information. Then, at Adepticon, the fleet will be on display in person all weekend, including a demonstration game played by some of the participating painters.
